Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Neisseria is a species of Gram-negative coffee bean-shaped diplococci ( typically occurring as two joined cells) bacteria responsible for the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the second most common bacterial STI (sexually transmitted infection) in the United Kingdom. Men more frequently show signs of infection than women. Typical symptoms include a discharge from the penis and a severe burning when passing urine. Women with gonorrhoea can develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to infertility. Gonorrhea has developed resistance to nearly every class of antibiotics used to treat it such as penicillin, tetracycline and fluoroquinolones.
