The late Senator Edwards, Ottawa, Ont. Death of Hon. W. G. Edwards A veteran figure in the lumber â arena passed away on September 17th in the person of Hon. W. C. Edwards, head of W. C. Edwards & Co., Ottawa. He was in his seventy-eighth year and had been suffering for some time from heart trouble. In his death one of the real old-timers has gone to his re ward after a busy, aggressive and successful career, which placed him in the forefront of the great lumber industry. Mr. Edwards always took a deep interest in matters that affected the welfare and prosperity of Canada, and was chairman of the Commission of Conservation. For several years he sat in the House of Com- mons as a member for Russell County, and in 1903 was sum- moned to the Senate. The late Senator, until a few years ago, conducted a big stock-breeding farm near Rockland, and was also connected with the big cement merger a few years ago. Until 1909 Mr. Edwards resided in Rockland, Ont. In October, 1919, the golden anniversary of the establishment of the Edwards mill in that thriving town was celebrated with great eclat. The occasion was a significant and memorable one from various standpoints, and the tributes paid Mr. Edwards were warm and sin- cere. He was presented by his employees with a handsome oil portrait of himself, accompanied by an appreciative address. Mr. Edwards played an important part in the $60,000,000 merger with the Riordan Company, which took place last year, when the in- terests of W. C. Edwards & Co., Gilmour & Hughson, the Ticonderoga Pulp & Paper Co., and the Kipawa Company were sold. All the hold- ings of these concerns have since been operated under the name of the Gatineau Company.
