As the applause increased in noise andfrequency, she grew correspondingly restless, andfinally during a burst of applause more emphaticthan usual, she dropped the ice cream dipper andtip-toed upstairs just to see what it was all lapse from her high resolve proved herundoing, or at least that of the ice cream venture,for during her absence, which took in a whole act,a dozen or more little darkeys entered an openwindow and disposed of most of the cream. AuntJanes first inkling of what had occurred waswhen she descended the stairs and saw a dozendusky forms going out of the window like so manyfrogs. What cream was left Aunt Jane would nooffer for sale, as the little marauders had usedtheir hands instead of spoons in helping them-selves. At this time I was sweet on one JosieHayward and I had taken her to the show. Shewas a very modest girl and when she saw me play- 5C. During the year of 65 McDonald Hall Blockwas built south of the Wilder House, the samebuilding now occupied by the Citizens NationalBank and other business houses. The upper floorof that building was one large hall with a stage inone end of it. After this all shows, both amateurand professional, were held in this hall up to thetime the opera house was built.
