Sir George Cayley. Portrait of British inventor Sir George Cayley (1773-1857). Cayley was a man of independent means, and had learned some science from a non-conformist clergyman who was also a fellow of the Royal Society. Cayley is recognized as the founder of the science of aerodynamics. In his flight designs he took the important step of separating the system providing the power from that contributing the lift. He designed a glider powered by a bicycle undercarriage, an airship (1816) & a helicopter (1818). He designed a large number of powered gliders & constructed the first man-carrying glider which was successfully (if reluctantly) tested by his coachman in 1853.
