ROSICRUCIAN - MAGIC SYMBOLS - OCCULT ART Hand-coloured plate from Williama Law's edition of Jakob Behmen, the Teutonic Philosopher - a work which deeply influenced the art and thought of the poet William Blake, and the symbolist, Oswald Wirth. This plate is of a curius shape because it consists of a number of intriguing fold-outs (a closed flap may be seen on the body of the naked woman: this flap folds back to reveal inner spiritual powers.) The section with the back of the man has already been folded out, and a bottom circular flap pulled down, to reveal the demonic entities which trouble the flames which pour upwards in a paroxysm of desire, within his lower parts. These flames and demons contrast with the world of stars on his back and head. This is an excellent portrayal of the polarised duality within the three-fold man. The realm of Mercury, at the breast, and here marked by the star-studded circle, seeks to reconcile, or mediate, the Sulphur of Will and the stellar Salt of Thinking. This half of the plate is therefore a commentary on the Three Principles of Ssalt, Mercury and Sulphur, whch figured so largely in the writings of Jakob Boehme. The spray of roses at the intersection of the cross-point of the Male and Female in this image, is an indication of the Rosicrucian origin of this design.
