INTRODUCTORY Cotton furnishes the raw material for one of our mostimportant manufacturing industries, and from one-fourthto one-tliird of our total exports. Its economic importance is far beyond numerical ex-pression, for, while the total crop of the world is ap-proximately ascertainable, the effect of cotton upon thecommercial and social relations of mankind is too far-reaching for estimation. Of the four great staples thatprovide man with clothing—cotton, silk, wool and flax—cot-ton, by reason of its cheapness and its many excellenciesis rapidly superseding its several rivals.
