Porter, seeing hisadvantage, loaded with incendi-ary shells, but at the first dis-charge the Arkansas was seento be already ablaze. Porter andhis men redoubled their Arkansas managed to getnear enough in-shore to make fastbut her cable burnt away, anddrifting again into the currentshe blew up. The Essex hadaccomplished the destruction ofthe last Confederate ram operat-ing on the Mississippi
