. Rectal and anal surgery : with description of the secret methods of the itinerant specialists. leave the tumor in situ, |)ut thepatient to bed, and constijiate thebowels for about three days, whenthey are to give a gentle , Warts or Papillomata.—These growthsare hypertroj)lnes of the pai)illa of the skin, in fact a kindof external villous polypi, so to say. They were formerlyconsidered syphilitic growths, but at present this idea isabandoned, though they generally occur on patients whohave practiced venereal excesses. In females they are to be found on both the anus andvulva at once. They consist of numerous little pedicleswhose summits branch (uit and press against the branchesof adjacent [)edicles, so that tlie whole mass sometimes lookslike a solid tumor on the surface, yet if scissors be rununder so as to snip away all the pedicles, the skin is foundbeneath merely dotted pretty thickly with the small Fig. 38.—Villous Polypus. IOLYPrs AND OrilKl! GROWTHS. 89 Treatment.—Vegetations may l>e sometimes destroyedby frequently dusting them with tannin ami Imiiit alum, but generally the best way is to amesthetize the patientand snip them away with scissors, using astringent lotionsafterwards. Condylomata.—This term has been loosely appliedboth to certain elevated mucous patches of secondarysyphilis, and to mere bunches of non-syphilitic skin aboutthe anus. The syphilitic cases will disappear on using reso-lute antisy[)hilitic internal medication. The non-syphiliticvarieties require the scissors if tliey are troublesome. Fibrous, Fatty and Cartilaginous Tumors of theAnus and Rectum.—These are rare. If they becometroublesome, they must be removed by excision. Cystic Tumors.—These, if troublesome, must be dis-sected out, or else have their interiors cauterized withpotassa cum calce. Iodine and nitric acid are not sufficientlyenergetic for the pur[K)se.
