Imprisoned Jews from Hungary and Greece were releaed from this building by soldiers of the Home Army after a fight with SS troops at the start of the Warsaw Uprising 1 August 1944. The building currently houses The High School and Economics School Complex Number 1 (Zespol Szkol Licealnych i Ekonomicznych Nr 1). Portrait shot across Stawki Street towards the entrance to the school. The Umschlagplatz Monument, marking the place of deportation to the Treblinka Death Camp for the residents of the Warsaw Ghetto, stands near this building (left of shot).
