Tycho Brahe's triangular sextant. Illustration of the triangular sextant invented in 1582 and used by Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. This sextant had a radius of around metres. The globe mount meant that this sextant was still as versatile as smaller sextants. Sextants are instruments used to measure the angular position of celestial bodies relative to the horizon. This sextant was built at the observatory of Uraniborg, built for Tycho Brahe on the island of Hven between 1576 and 1580.
