'Uranometria' title page, 1723 edition. This star atlas was originally published in 1603 in Augsberg, by German astronomer Johann Bayer (1572-1625). A total of 51 star maps contained the most accurate observations of the time. This title page included Latin and Greek text and allegorical artworks. At left and right is Ptolemy as an Atlas figure, and Hercules. The inscriptions below read 'Atlas the earliest teacher of astronomy' and 'Hercules the earliest student of astronomy'. The other figures are Apollo (upper left), Cybele (Eternity, top centre) and Diana (upper right). Capricorn is below the banner, above a depiction of Augsburg.
