Berlin Mitte, The beautiful Neo-gothic Friedrichswerder Church reflected in the modern Auswärtiges Amt der Bundesrepublik building

The beautiful Neo-gothic Friedrichswerder Church is surrounded by new buildings - the City planning department of Berlin seems to have demonstrated little foresight when passing the plans. Friedrichswerder Church was the first Neo-Gothic church built in Berlin, Germany. It was designed by architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and built between 1824-1831 It was badly damaged during the Second World War and only renovated between 1979 to 1986. The church was opened in 1987 to coincide with the 750 year celebrations of the founding of Berlin. It was subsequently used as an additional venue for the Old National Gallery and after undergoing further restoration from 1997 to 2000, the church housed a permanent display of early 19th century sculpture. Structural damage from nearby building developments, forced the church to close in late 2012 and the artworks have been removed. It will be closed until further notice.
