The Granite monthly, a New Hampshire magazine, devoted to literature, history, and state progress . grims of both continents asThe Wayside, is a unique, manygabled old mansion, situated near theroad at the base of a pine-covered hill, facing broad, level fields, and command-ing a view of charming rural dozen green acres are laid out inrustic paths ; but with the exception ofthe removal of unsightly underbrush, the landscape is left in a wild and pic-turesque state. Immediately in therear of the house, however, A. BronsonAlcott, a former occupant, planned aseries of terraces, and thereon is a sys-tem of trees. The house was com-menced in the seventeenth century andhas been added to at different periods, and withal is quaint enough to satisfythe most exacting antiquarian. At theback rise the more modern portions, and the tower, wherein was woven themost delightful of American romances, and about which cluster tender memo-ries of the immortal Hawthorne. Theboughs of the whispering pines almosttouch the lofty windows. The interior of the dwelling is seemly. Da Ilk I Lothrop. 369-. UJ o X 0 X _J 3Q. oo o X oS: UJ > O ;70 JJauidl Loihrop.
