Cuthbertson, of Dobbie & Rothesay, Scotland, read a most en- tertaining and instructive paper be- fore the English sweet pea confer- ence, in December last. He likened the career of the sweet pea to the story of the Vicar of Wakefield, the simile to the vicar's troubles, after a long period of serenity, beginning with, the advent of Cole's Countess Spencer. The period following this he referred to as the "green spec- tacle" period, but he was sanguine about the future of the sweet pea.
