The flow pipe can be run through the old house alongside the present main, which need not be disturbed. EXPANSION TANK OVERFLOWS. I have a, hot water heating system at my retail place in this city. The range consists of two houses, one of them 25x80 and the other 25x65. Sev- eral days ago I disconnected the heat from the house 25x80, with the inten- tion of rebuilding this house. The other house, 25x65, has a 3-inch main which rises from the boiler to a height of ten feet and then branches into two 2-inch flows, which run to the farther end and there connect with eight l*^-inch re- turns, four for each flow. The highest flow at the farther end is connected by a 1-inch pipe to the expansion tank, which is four feet above the flow. When both houses were heated, every- thing worked well, but now, when only the one house is heated, even a fairly strong fire in the boiler causes the wa- tei to flow out of the expansion tank and steam escapes with it. There is also a loud cracking and tearing sound from the pipes. Yet I do not have over one-third as strong a flre in the boiler as formerly. Can you suggest some means of overcoming this gath- ering of steam in the system and the throwing of the greater part of the water out of the overflow from the expansion tankf This overflowing is a daily occurrence, and keeps me wor- rying lest some night the system will run out all the water and cause a break in the boiler. C. W. E. The description of the heating sys- tem does not make it entirely clear whether the flow pipes run downhill or uphill, although, from the fact that the expansion tank is connected with the "highest flow at the farther end," it would
