The River Rhine surges at summer flow rates averaging 600 cubic metres (21,000 cubic feet) per second through narrow channels in the Rheinfallfelsen, rocky crags facing the full force of Europe’s largest and most powerful waterfall at the Rhine Falls or Rheinfall, near Schaffhausen, Switzerland. The Rheinfallfelsen, reachable only by boat, is the remnant of a hard limestone cliff flanking the former channel of the High or Upper Rhine. Despite some erosion over 15,000 years since the last Ice Age, it has largely withstood the massive water pressures.

Rhine Falls or Rheinfall, near Schaffhausen, northern Switzerland: the River Rhine surges at summer flow rates averaging 600 cubic metres (21,000 cubic feet) per second through narrow channels in the Rheinfallfelsen, a mighty rock facing the full impact of Europe’s largest and most powerful waterfall. The Rheinfallfelsen, reachable only by boat, is the remnant of a hard limestone cliff flanking the former channel of the High or Upper Rhine. Despite suffering some erosion over the 15,000 years since the last Ice Age, it has largely withstood the massive water pressures. The Rhine, flowing out of Lake Constance, tumbles about 23 m (75 ft) at Rheinfall before it proceeds more sedately towards the German border.
