He enlisted in Australia on outbreak of war and sailed from Melbourne on board HMAT Ceramic on 22 December 1914. Gunner Bias was killed in action, aged 30, at Ypres on 21 July 1917. He is buried at Reninghelst Cemetery, Belgium. JV Bias' service number is 1750.
