The important part which Queen Margaret had in forming the destinies ofthe Elphinstone family has been already indicated in the foregoing memoirof Alexander, first Lord Elphinstone. To her and her husbands initiativeand influence, the marriage of that Elphinstone nobleman with ElizabethBarlow, her favourite maid of honour, is to be attributed. To her influenceand patronage also, there cannot be a doubt, the creation of the peerage ofElphinstone, the grant of the great barony of Kildrummy in Aberdeenshire,and the bestowal of many other royal favours to the first Lord Elphinstoneand his wife, must be largely traced.
