DNA extraction experiment. Teenage boy using a thermometer to measure the temperature of a warm water bath as part of an experiment he is carrying out at home to extract DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sampled from himself. The experiment involves using a buccal swab to obtain cheek cells, adding enzymes and using a warm water bath (50 degrees Celsius) to break down the cell membranes. The sample then has ethanol (chilled in an ice bath) added to precipitate the DNA. The DNA can then be sent for testing and further analysis. For a sequence showing DNA extraction, see images C024/0365 to C024/0372.
