Netherlands Open Air Museum (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum), Arnhem, Netherlands. Architect: Mecanoo, 2000. Detail of boulder housi

Mecanoo were commissioned to design an entrance pavilion and indoor exhibition space for the Netherlands Open Air Museum, situated in rolling forest outside Arnhem. The building acts as the central square for the Museum, linking inside and outside: the ticket desk, shop and cafe are on the spacious open-plan ground floor, with exhibitions and the HollandRama rotating panorama theatre below ground. Above ground, the panorama theatre is housed in a windowless boulder-like structure, with a 143-metre long wall behind, showcasing a variety of historic masonry techniques. On the other side of the building, a long glass facade interspersed with staggered timber frames overlooks the Museum grounds.
