During its coursefrom the intervertebral foramen to the angle of the rib the thoracicnerve is accompanied by the thoracic artery and vein which lie imme-diately above it. The external intercostal muscle, with its fibers runnmg downwardand outward, is stretched across the intercostal space and extends fromthe tubercle of the ribs outward, with little or no aponeurotic attach-ment to the spine; while the internal intercostal muscle, with its fibersrunning downward and inward, stops at about the level of the costalangle and is continued by a thin aponeurosis, called
