It was owingto him that the peninsula then called Shawmut, upon whichBoston now stands, was selected as suitable for settlement, anexcellent spring of water being the chief attraction. TheRev. William Blackstone, who claimed the right of owner-ship, was paid a small sum for permitting houses to be erectedon Shawmut, and he left the spot when he found that he wasto be under subjection to stricter Puritans than himself.—
