These tests were very satisfactory. The location being free from foot hills, and the top ofthe mountain level, it was decided to dispense with trestlework, and by blasting and filling in to have a solid roadbed. Strong retaining walls are built where deemednecessary to prevent sliding, and the whole bed is welldrained. A broad gauge and heavy rail was chosen toadd to the stability as well as the capacity of the trucks.
