In 1472S (4a ats^= ^r( Richard married Anne, widow of the ^-^ <£^ Lancastrian Prince of Wales, and daughter of the Earl of Warwick,the King-maker; her sister having previously married hisbrother Clarence. The latter prince stood in the way ofRichards ambition, who fomented the intrigues whichproved fatal to him. On the death of Edward IV. in 1483,Richard became the natural guardian of his nephews, andassumed the title of Protector of the Realm. The elder ofthe boys was immediately proclaimed king, as Edward V.,the other was Duke of York. Richard met the young king220. RICHARD III. 221 on his way from Ludlow Castle, where the late soveregin hadresided during the latter part of his reign, and pretending thepurest loyalty towards his royal nephew, offered to conducthim to London. Having thus secured the person of the king,he next got possession of his brother. The Queen hadretired with this son to Westminster Abbey; but she deliveredhim up at the intercession of the Primate and Archbishop ofYork. In a few days after, Gloucester had the two princesclosely confined in the Tower, under the pretence of guardingthem from danger. Gloucesters next step was to remove those nobles whowere faithful to the cause of the young Edward. Lord Hast-ings was arrested on a charge of sorcery, and at once behead-ed in the chapel-yard of the Tower. On the same day LordRivers, maternal uncle of the king, was executed with threeothers at Pontefract Castle. When these murders had beencommitted,
