Heart surgery sutures. Sutured chest of a patient after heart surgery. This is an example of subcutaneous sutures, where the stitching is placed below the surface of the skin. Three drainage tubes are seen emerging from the patient. The two at centre right drain excess fluid from the wound. The tube at lower right is draining fluid from a collapsed lung. This kind of suturing is necessary after heart operations such as heart transplants and heart bypass operations.
