Mountain Panorama of the Anqosh / North Face of Huascarán (left) to NE Face of Huascarán Norte (right). Cordillera Blanca. Peruvian Andes. Peru

The north face (Anqosh Face) of Huascarán Sur (South) 6,768m (left) and the northeast face of Huascarán Norte (North) 6,664m (right). Huascarán Sur, first summited in 1932, is the highest peak in Peru and the fourth highest in South America. The col that separates the two summits of Huascarán is known as the Garganta (literally: throat). Viewed from near Chopicalqui Base Camp 4,400m. The Anqosh Face was climbed by Carlos Buhler and Sharon Wood between 24 and 29 July, 1985. The lefthand skyline below Huascarán Sur is the Spanish (East) Ridge. On 31 May 1970, the Ancash earthquake caused a substantial part of the northwest side of the mountain to collapse. The resulting mud and debris avalanche buried the town of Yungay, killing more that 20,000 people in minutes.
