Assyrian relief. 19th-century artwork of a stone carving (relief) showing scenes from Assyria, a civilisation of the Ancient Near East that existed in the first three millennia BC in what is now Iraq. At left, women and a child are depicted below cattle. At centre, bearing a bow and arrows, a warrior-king is attended by scribes and a soldier. At far right, Assyrian soldiers are besieging a city, using ladders to scale its walls. The Assyrian Empire reached its height in around 705-612 BC. This woodcut dates from 1880.
