Seaweeds at low tide, Terrace Beach, Ucluelet, British Columbia
The Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island is sparsely settled, with a high level of terrestrial and marine biodiversity. A popular place to experience this is the Pacific Rim National Park encompassing the towns of Tofino and Ucluelet in the mid-coastal area. Terrace Beach in Ucluelet is a great place to go at low tide to experience the coastal scenery, and the diversity of sea weeds that can be seen in the intertidal zone at low tide. These are some of the species from the Pacific Northwest that people collect. rockweed (Fucus gardneri), nori (Porphyra),sSugar wrack (Saccharina latissima), winged kelp (Alaria marginata), triple-rib kelp (Cymathere triplicata), seersucker kelp (Costaria costata), bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) splendid Iridescent seaweed (Mazzaella splendens), sea cabbage (Hedophllum sessile), dead man fingers (Codium fragile) and sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca).
