Livingstone's house at Hamilton. Illustration of the road and house in Hamilton, Scotland, where British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) lived briefly in 1862. Livingstone studied medicine and theology in Glasgow before being ordained in 1840. He explored southern Africa, travelled along the Zambesi River, and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain, he died in Africa, where his heart was interred. Artwork from 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone', first published in around 1870.
