The Farmhouse at Birdoswald Roman Fort in the English Border County of Cumbria.
The old farmhouse at Birdoswald is thought to stand on the site once occupied by a bastle. A bastle was a fortified farm house with the ground floor available for animals and accommodation above. They were built at the time of the Reivers. These were cross border raiders who would steal cattle and other goods from the isolated farmhouses. It was often a two way traffic. The tower was added the mid 19th century with crenelations to give it the poplar Victorian castle look. Today the farmhouse is used for accommodation and groups of up to 39 people can book it from English Heritage, owners of the site.
