He was anenthusiastic student of Shakespeareand possessed decided ability as anJacob Augustus VogeU. ^^.^-qj. jjg obtained a very desirable position in the old Park Theatre in New York, but gave up his cherishedprofession at the request of his father. He contracted a severe cold while ona pedestrian tour from Norwich to Rome, N. Y., which resulted in tuber-culosis and his GEN. FREDERICK TOWNSEND WARD. Frederick T. Ward was born in Salem, Mass., December 29, 1831, anddied in Ningo Po, China, October 23, 1862, of wounds received in battle. Heattended the schools of his town and in 1846 entered Captain Partridgesmilitary school in Norwich, remaining nearly two j^ears. Soon after leaving Norwich, he became a soldier of Fortune. He wentto South America in 1849 and joined the forces of Garabaldi in estabUshing theRoman RepubUc, which was abohshed in the later part of the same year. Hejoined the French army in 1853, and served with distinction in the CrimeanWar until its close in March, 1856.
