Water pipeline and railway at Storr Lochs Hydro-electric Power Station, Bearreraig Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK

Photo shows the steep water pipeline and railway behind Storr Lochs Hydro-Electric power station near Portree on the Isle of Skye. The pipeline carries water down the cliffs from the dam on Loch Leathan (one of the Storr Lochs), to drive three 800KW hydroelectric turbine generators in the power station 150m below. The power lines carrying the electricity to the island can be seen on the right. The narrow gauge railway track next to the pipes allows materials to be winched down the steep cliff to the power station. Storr Lochs was Skye's first proper power station, opened in 1952, at which time it could meet the energy needs of the entire Island and provided electricity to many islanders for the first time, causing great excitement. Now this station is connected into a wider electricity supply network which covers Northern Scotland and the turbines are switched on as required by that network. Skye's requirements have risen threefold and are also drawn from the same network.
