Madrid has welcomed Christmas with the lighting of the lights that adorn the main axes of the capital, lights that "are not of joy, but of hope," said the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, during the traditional countdown to officially inaugurate these festivities. On this occasion, the event, which had a reduced capacity, took place in the Crystal Gallery of the Palacio de Cibeles, where six municipal service workers were in charge of pressing the power buttons: María Jesús Utrilla, from Samur Social ; Miguel Ángel Muñoz, from Samur-Civil Protection; Estrella Camarero, from Madrid Salud; Marta Gómez, firefighter; Miguel Ángel Álvarez, from Madrid Salud, and the municipal police Pilar Laso. A total of million LED lights, with minimal energy consumption and less environmental impact, already light more than 210 streets in the 21 districts of the capital. In addition to the arches, chains, firs or almond trees, the lighting maintains the traditional Christmas motifs of figurative nativity scenes that were already incorporated last year in the Plaza Mayor and at the gates of Alcalá, Toledo and San Vicente. It also repeats the great luminous ball of 'video mapping' at the confluence of Alcalá and Gran Vía streets, although this time the animation will be continuous, the music will play in the background with lower volume and there will be no passes to avoid crowds. The flag of Spain with LED lights is the symbolic star of this year and already illuminates the Prado-Recoletos axis, between Colón and Neptuno, the Juan Bravo and Raimundo Fernández bridges
