Tamerlane fixed the seat of his vast empire at Samarcand, wherehe received the homage of numerous sovereigns, and among the rest the em-bassadors of the emperor Manuel Paleologus and Henry III., king of died in 1405. Tamerlane conducted his government alone and withoutfavorites, but was in the highest degree fierce and fanatical in his religion;and, although no conquests were ever attended with greater cruelty, devastation,and waste of human life, he affected the title of benefactor to mankind.
