Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is celebrated in Oaxaca from 31 October until 2 Novemeber. For two days the spirits of the dead are allowed to return to earth to visit loved ones and altars are made in homes with food and gifts. October 31 is when the spirits of children visit - the angelitos, with adults visiting the following night. Families visit cemeteries, leaving offerings at tombs and decorating them with flowers and gifts and spend time with their family members buried there.
