If, now, we desire togrow strong, we must not interfere with this dependenceof one part upon another. We must build up all. Wemust renew the muscles, and have our nerves strong andhealthy by means of pure, rich blood. Some persons imagine that they may make themselvesstrong by the use of tobacco and poisonous drinks, suchas beer, wine, and whisky. This is a very serious mistake,and often leads to drunkenness. They do not, however, add any-real strength to us, but cause us to use up our naturalstore of force more rapidly than we otherwise would this reason they make us weaker after their effectpasses off. Experiments with working men show that all kinds ofspirituous liquors make them less able to endure hard this reason, the owners of great factories often prohibittheir workmen from using such drinks. Tobacco weakens the nerves, and by also weakening thestomach, it tends to weaken the whole body. Men who become accustomed to the use of these poison-ous narcotics, either alcoholic drinks or tobacco, crave themwith a passion that they can not control. This does notprove that such articles are beneficial, but rather that theyare hurtful. Boys are often led to use tobacco and strong drinks be-cause they see men do so.
