My coal bill to heat 5000 sq. ft. of glass surface with your boiler is less than last winter's coal bill, when I had only 2050 sq. ft. of glass, heated with the 8-section cast iron boiler. The expansion tank is outside, on a platform thirty feet high. The tank is leaking and we shall have to get a new one. The elevated platform is rather unsightly and we should like to do away with it. Will the hot water system work satisfactorily if we take down the expansion tank, plug up the opening at the bottom and leave the city water pressure on the return pipe in the boiler? There are air valves on all the highest pipes in each house. F. B.—Ala, The city water pressure may be used instead of an elevated expansion tank, but there may be danger of an explo- sion in case the line between you and the pumping plant is shut off for re- pairs or other cause. This can be guarded against by having a safety valve upon the system. For temporary use, it would also be well to have a small expansion tank slightly above the highest point in the system.
