He went early to Prairie du Chien,Wis., where he was for years connected with hisbrother Champion in large mercantile, elevator andmilling enterprises, and accumulated a his brother he also was always ready to con-tribute liberally to the welfare of relatives and friends,and to any worthy object. In his later years fortuneseemed adverse, and losses by failures swept awaymuch of his fortune. His last days were spent atFreeport, 111., with his ever-faithful brother, Alonzo,where he died, December 2, 1873. Children: onechild only, by the first marriage, that died in infancy. 109. Alonzo Pelton, sixth son of Ezra, Itha-mar, John, John, SamueP, John, born in Chester,Hampden Co., Mass, March 26, 1816, and was. ^ ^^-^^^^ <^o^ Chester, Mass.; Prairie du Chien, Wis. 119 brought up on his fathers farm. He removed toPrairie du Chien, Wis., about 1840, and there enteredinto the mercantile business with his older brothers,who had preceded him several years, and continuedwith them until 1867, when he went to Freeport, III,where he entered into partnership with his nephew,under the title of E. C. Dwight & Co., and did alarge business in jewelry, pianos and organs. retiring on account of ill health in 1869, became the head of the house. Sometimeafter he removed his business to Chicago, where,connected with a man who left Mr. Peltons carefulways, losses followed, many of which were doubtlessthe results of the great shrinkage of values on theresumption of specie payments.
