The Central Otago Rail Trail crosses a bridge over a gorge near the township of Lauder. The Trail is a multi day cycle ride or hike.
The trail is 152 km long and runs between Clyde and Middlemarch. Average riders take 3-5 days to complete the trail. It follows the route of old Otago Central Railway, a branch line that ran from Cromwell to Dunedin. The railway was started in 1877 but the final section between Clyde and Cromwell wasnt completed until 1922. It was decommissioned in the 1980s and has since been turned into a long distance cycle and walking route. Many of the small townships along the old route now provide services for the trail users.
