Indian Ocean, topographic map. This map is centred on the Maldives island chain in the Indian Ocean, with Africa at left, India at upper centre, and Southeast Asia at right. The seabed depth varies from shallow (light blue) on the continental shelves, to deep ocean basins (dark blue). The Indian Ocean has two major ridges: the Maldive Ridge west of India and the Ninety East Ridge east of India. Highlands and lowlands of the continents are also shown, as ridges and flat areas. Topographic and bathymetric data is usually gathered by using aerial and satellite imagery combined with radar and sonar mapping.
