T-S1 found in communication with the Rebel pickets on theother side of the river, sometimes of the most friendlycharacter, sometimes exchanging commodities andsometimes taunting each other as Johnnies andYanks. One day a Johnny and a Yank swam to the middle ofthe river, held a friendly conversation and as theyparted found by inquiry that they bore the same nameand finally that they were first cousins. Before thetime agreed upon for another interview, the regimentmoved and they never saw each other again. Occa-sionally the men would invade the enemys territory forspoil and on one such occasion two or three of thempaid for their temerity with several months in Rebelprisons. It required some such experiences to teach themen that the professed friendship of planters on thatside of the river was a cunning devise to entrap theirunwary feet.
