See page 497.—This nearer view of the rivers side willgive a more just idea of the spaciousstreet which borders the shore, and ofthe size of the buildings, though it showsbut a small part of the front line of thecity. The reader will readily perceive,that the landing-place is convenient, asit extends far along the bank, up anddown the river. It is indeed a landing-place well adapted to the extensive andincreasing trade of this commercial me-tropolis of the west. The principal public buildings are thecourthouse, jail, four markets (one of. 500 DESCRIPTION OP THE STATE OF OHIO. which is 400 feet in length), the Bazaar,Cincinnati college, the Catholic Athe-naeum, the Medical college, the Mechan-ics institute, two theatres, two museums,the hospital and lunatic asylum, theWoodward high school, and nearlythirty churches. The town is chieflybuilt of brick. Manufactures.—Within a few years,the amount and variety of manufactureshave greatly increased. The principalbusiness is done in heavy iron castings,for steam-engines and machinery. Agreat deal of cabinet-work is also pro-duced, and numerous steamboats andcanal-boats are built every year. TheCincinnati Manufacturing Company havea collection of large buildings on DeerCreek. Great quantities of pork are preparedand shipped at Cincinnati. In 1848,not less than 500,000 hogs were killedin the city. The price was then onlyabout two and a half cents
