The Prairie type locomotive for passenger service has foundits most extensive and general use on the Lake Shore & Michi-gan Southern Railway, where for the past six years it has beenthe favorite type for heavy high speed trains. The first locomo-tive of this type was introduced on that railroad in 1901, andweighed 174,500 lbs. This was followed three years later by anew design of the same type, which weighed 233,000 lbs., and atthat time was the heaviest passenger locomotive in the world. In1906 another design was brought out, which weighed 244,700lbs., again being the heaviest passenger locomotive in the next step in this development of passenger locomotives onthis railway changes from the Prairie to the Pacific type, whichare now being delivered by the American Locomotive step was taken to conform to the New York Central Linesstandards.
