Potholers entering cave below Predjama castle , Slovenia .

The stunning Predjama Castle is an impenetrable fortress wedged tight into a crevasse halfway up a 123 metre cliff face that protrudes dramatically into the surrounding basin Its most famous resident was the Prince Erazem Erasmus who taunted invading soldiers who thought they had him blockaded in the castle and became exasperated by his ability to seemingly have an endless supply of food What the soldiers didn t know was that Erasmus had a secret passage through the karst hills that led from the back of the castle out into the nearby Vipava valley He would reguarly go for fresh supplies which included ripe cherries which he would throw at the invading soldiers
