Rifle in hand, he sits alert and attentive, his grayhorse as patient as a statue, cars pricked forward as if sharing his riderswatchfulness. The time is late Autumn, the trees and bushes are almost bareof leaves, and under a snowy sky the deserted moorland stretches, past agleam of water, to the distant horizon. The picture is illustrative of thetype of man who, under Napoleon, carried the French Eagle to the farthestbounds of Europe. Signed at the left, ^Meissonikr, I8t>7. In a long mantle of red velvet withvoluminous sleeves, worn over a dark suit, he looks every bit an old Vene-tian nobleman, and the magnificent tapestry on the wall behind the pairshow the lady to belong to a wealthy family.
