Bullet hole in a metal pole on the Playground of Cleveland Elementary School after a gunman killed 5 and wounded 29 Asia students in Stockton, CA. In 1989 Patrick West who also used the name Patrick Edward Purdy and had an extensive criminal history opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm pistol. West fired 106 rounds into the school playground as over 400 students played during the noontime recess. It was reported that West disliked Asian Immigrants and all of the children killed during the shooting were Southeast Asian. West fatally shot himself before he could be apprehended by police. After the Cleveland School shooting the United States Congress passed a nationwide ban on “military style” semiautomatic rifles defined as Assault Weapons, The ban took affect in 1994 and expired in 2004. After a number of recent assaults involving Assault style semiautomatic weapons there is a movement in the government to pass another law banning Assault Weapons.
