A captive hand-raised Monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus, newly emerged from chrysalis stage inside a butterfly cage with floral tube and milkweed. Kansas, USA. This female has wet, crumpled wings. She will pump fluid from her oversized, fat body to the veins of the wings to inflate them. It takes a few minutes, then a few hours more for the wings to dry enough to fly.
