The Sint Nicolaaskapel - also known as Carolingian and Valkhof Chapel - was built around 1030 on the remains of the Palace Chapel of Charlemagne and after the example of his Paltkapel in Aachen. At the demolition of the Valkhofburcht in 1795, it was decided to keep the chapel. It is the only existing Romanesque central construction in the Netherlands
