As waspointed out in a previous chapter, the exercises of the apobates,whether in chariot or on horseback, are really military ; andthis military character is marked on the Tarentum coins bythe addition of a shield. Another type represented on thecoins of Tarentum is the torch-race on horseback. The coinselected (Fig. 170) is slightly later than the last, and is ascribedby Dr. Evans to the hegemony of Pyrrhus. Horses and mares were admitted alike to all races except theKaXirii], which was confined to mares.
