Ovarian follicle. Coloured light micrograph of a section through a secondary follicle in an ovary. At upper left is the large nucleus of the developing egg (oocyte, orange). Immediately surrounding the egg is the discus proligerus (purple), which is composed of membrana granulosa cells. These cells also extend to become the outer coating of the follicle and connect with the stroma (red) of the ovary. The pink region surrounding the egg and discus proligerus is a fluid-filled space known as the follicular antrum.
